OVERVIEW:
Nyoman Semara Jaya is the younger brother to Putu Suliyah Somartini, his sister who also resident of Semara Putra Orphanage in Klungkung, and one of the original Hearing Aid Program participants.

Semara Jaya is a quiet little boy, rather shy from what we experience.   The family originates from the island of Nusa Penida, which falls within the Klungkung district.  Because of Semara Jaya's and Suliyah's hearing challenges they have been placed in the Klungkung orphanage by their parents and remain there all year round.  Perhaps at best, they might go to their home island during the July end of school year break.  However, we have known them to remain at the orphanage even during this time some years.

Nusa Penida is a particularly poor island, it has no tourism like Bali.  The fact Semara Jaya and Suliyah spend a lot of time in the orphanage would be due to their hearing challenges and also economics.  Their parents most likely are unable to afford for them to travel by boat back to their home island too often.  We've been told by our driver/assistant, Wayan that the parents would come to Bali and visit their children on occassions.

Listed on the paperwork we have, the parents names listed are:
Bapak  (Father) :  I Made Sukerta
Mother (Ibu)   :  Ni Nengah Santini

Semara Jaya is a sweet little boy, and he can also be very strong willed.  He seems to get distracted quite easily.. it appears to us he has quite a poor level of concentration.  It's very possible he has some challenges we've not been informed of.  It would seem to be the case.  However he is looked after well, and especially by his big sister, who is very protective of him, which is nice to see.

It's been reported at times all is going good with his hearing aids, other times we have received reports that he doesn't want to wear his hearing aids.  We know his sister, Suliyah would be trying to encourage him, however, sometimes, I guess boys will be boys and in an environment which must be difficult for their children without regular contact with their parents, who they know are on a neighbouring island, who knows what other effect this may have on the children like Semara Jaya.  It must be difficult.

In any case, Bikabele will continue to ensure he receives all his hearing tests, and is encouraged to wear his hearing aids and receive speech therapy, in strong hopes that he will receive maximum benefit possible.  Hopefully as he gets older he will settle further and be more focused.   At the moment, he appears content to be just a young boy, playing around doing boy things with his young orphanage brothers.
